The Reaction to ‘Breast-Feed Gestapo’ is Outraged and Nuanced!

I love the reactions (in the comments and also sent to my e-mails) to the article - see post the Story of the Zoops! below and think you’re all right on. Absolutely. Amy P made some good points suggesting that the ’shrink’ that Peyser quotes as an expert might, just might, not be idiocy on Ms. Peyser’s part (why in the world would the colleagues of a Psychiatrist have any opinion worth mentioning?) unless! The pharmaceutical companies (and their cohorts the drug-pushing doctors) are behind the story. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. food for thought, and yes, it would explain a LOT. And the fact that the formula companies are sponsoring attacks just like this is very well documented by Mama Bear here: The New York City Formula Media Lies

So what do you learn from all this? beware the Squeemers! Long Live the Zoops!

The Clash of World Views comics are kickin’ my butt!

Okay, so maybe its the the thrush that’s given me a nipple crack (or 6!), or the tooth decay that I HAVE to decide how to handle, or the parade of visiting relatives, or the impending vacation, or the unexpected colds that I thought were symptoms of the rampant tooth decay and awoke in a cold sweat at 2 o’clock in the morning and then worried over all night. Maybe. But, these comics so far have been really difficult. See, when I was reading the article about babies lying to their parents I thought “oh, it’s a problem with the world view of these people.” and the series of comics just came to me. Unfortunately I was on the beach at the time with no pen. So, by the time I started to labor over them, the original impulse was long gone. So I created the Clash of World Views: Birth! and posted it to my site and for the first time EVER in the history of Hathor comics I took it down the next day, it was nagging at me that I hadn’t gotten it right. (in reality I think it was rather offensive! ;o) So I redid the comic and posted it again. And then a wise reader wrote to me that I hadn’t gotten it quite right AGAIN! and lo and behold she was right! (thanks Emily!) so I fixed it an re-posted it. There you go…if you visited my site at random moments in the last week, you might have been lucky enough to see the changes. (though I think the first fiasco wasn’t noticed because I didn’t get any hatemail over it-gotten you curious haven’t I?)

Anyway, I’m going to try and finish the comics this week and then I have a few more ideas (one includes homework, joy joy!) before I go on vacation. Maine!

Clash of World Views!

I’ve been thinking a lot about how to compare and contrast the mainstream-childcare world view with the one that more closely reflects my own (and yours too, I assume ;o) and came up with this series of comics… I’ve tried to remember which books informed the basis of my ideas and the one that I come up with the most is the Continuum Concept: If you haven’t read it yet, I really recommend it. But with a caveat. The Continuum Concept wasn’t written as a parenting guide and the author has never been a parent, the point of view is anthropological, and within its cover is plenty to interpret and decipher. And debate. Also, it was written during a time in which Freudism, and oedipus complexes, and other such psycho-gobbledy goo goo, were discussed with abandon. Jean Liedloff’s opinion on ‘why some adults are the way they are’ differ widely from our currently held opinion (her thoughts on homosexuality, specifically) and so should be read with the theorem “take what you want, leave the rest” in mind. Have I enticed you yet? I’ve loaned the book out to quite a few people, and some LOVE it, some HATE it. But, there you go. A pretty good book.

And while you’re in the mood to buy something, don’t forget I have books and shirts for sale too!

Heather
