Exactly. I had a friend who loved her doc so much she made (the doc) promise that if she went into labor while the doc was on vacation, the doc would come back to deliver the baby. She went into labor.. guess who got a C-section after a few rounds of pitocin into a laboring woman?

Wow.. this is really bad! I can’t believe this isn’t illegal! I had all 3 of my boys with a group of midwives working at a hospital. I wrote out a birth plan, basically saying that I want only 1 nurse to check me periodically and as rarely as possible, and NO shots, NO taking my baby away at any point (unless baby can’t breathe or something), and NO meds. They didn’t give any of my babies any shots or tests, and they pretty much left us alone to give birth, and my husband caught all our babies. It was so peaceful and natural… only saw a nurse and midwife 3 or 4 times throughout all 3 of my births. (Oh, and just to make you ladies jealous… my first labor was 7 hours, second labor was 5 hours, and third labor was 3 hours!)

Gosh that is so true! I had a c-section because the baby’s heartbeat went to 80. The little stinker had that umbilical cord wrapped around her 2 times. My second c-section (hospital wouldn’t allow vbac) was planned for 40 weeks which i had to push for. They all want to do it at 38 weeks it seems. Then I was told that if i wanted my doctor I’d have to do it at 39 weeks so i decided ok one week is ok, then i get another call saying hey the doctor wants you at 38 weeks and i was like why? Im not comfortable with that. He was planning on going on vacation and rescheduled everyone. I went with the other doctor in the practice but my waiting room partner (always seemed ot have same apts) had her baby at 37 weeks because of this doctor wanting to reschedule and man oh man did this kid have breathing issues and was only 5lbs at birth.

Blind faith in what “they” think is best is a scary thing. I recently had a similar experience with an acquaintance. Induced at 5 am on a Friday before the due date. We tried to tell her but because “they” thought it was best, that’s what happened. Apparently, a nurse actually said to her that it happens all the time because doctors don’t want to deliver on the weekend. This didn’t seem to disturb her half as much as it did me. No c-sec but all the scads of other interventions. Now the baby is hospitalized with breathing issues, hmmm. Oh, and the breastfeeding relationship was totally undermined. How did we get this far gone?

My nephew was born on Christmas Eve four years ago by C-Sec. Even though my sister went into labor on her own, I suspect the doctor did not want to spend Christmas Eve in the hospital.

it is so alarming that this has become so normal that most people don’t even question it. my niece just had her first and the doctor wanted to sleep so they stalled her labor all night then gave her pit and an epidural in the morning. they had to do an episiotomy to get the baby out. when i voiced shock, no one seemed to get why this was wrong. (i didn’t say anything in front of niece, just to bil and mil) they all think i am brave, heck anyone who goes into the hospital is brave. i think the doctors and nurses and hospitals take advantage of women when they are most vulnerable. and since most people don’t know they have a right to say no they just don’t.

My daughter was born in late August and she has a friend born just 2 days after her in the hospital. The mother told me the hospital was very busy trying to get her and many other pregnant women to give birth before the 3-day weekend — Labor Day! After the fact everyone is just happy to hav their baby but it is so hard for me to belive that these same women will go back to the same hospital for their next birth.

Dude, these stories are terrifying! wow! More comics on the way, I’m just coming down off the week, the relatives, and the sugar buzz.
A few years ago I declared boxing day “Homebirth Action Day”. I figured that the day after everyone celebrates an unassisted birth in a manger that it might be a good time to start the discussion about homebirth. Problem is that I can never get the action part going, I’m always too wiped out from the holidays.
But then again, your stories are reminding me that every day should be homebirth action day. Off to draw some comics!
xox,
Heather
