And you drive faster because the baby is screaming because s/he can’t see you. So you are trying to get to you destination asap…

So the alternative is…..? Live in town so you can walk everywhere while carrying your 2 week old and holding the hands of your 1 and 2 year olds? Or maybe you would suggest driving a buggy into town… or driving your car under 20 mph so that you don’t have to put the baby in a car seat…? In my opinion this comic is ridiculous. It suggests that a car seat is an annoyance that we shouldn’t have to deal with. The leading cause of death in children under the age of 2 is from the child not being restrained properly, if at all.

Oh, and how do roads “make it impossible for young or old to walk anywhere anymore”?

I hear your concern, Heather Sharpe, about safety, but the roads issue is a broad one. I drive my little kids to school, but I think we all understand it would be much better if they cycled. But they can’t because there are too many cars – like mine – each of which represents possible death to the unprotected child. What a vicious circle we place ourseves in.

Heather, I live (currently) in a “GREEN” country where it is considered a person GIVEN RIGHT to be able to go anywhere at anytime. The Elderly have NO ISSUES like Americans do adjusting to failing Health and eyesight in advancing age. WHY? Because the public Tranportation options are 2nd 2 none! (In fact I believe they are the models for other countries) I am UNABLE to drive a car & yet my children & I go EVERYWHERE any ANYWHERE we want, by bus, Train or Streetcar. Those “BIG SWATHS of CONCRETE” are known as highways, btw, & just in case you’ve never tried it or seen the crosses walking along one or trying to get across one is basically suicide. Having once lived in a neighborhood, one bordered by TWO such roads, I agree we could not walk OR cycle anywhere without cutting through private property. (No sidewalks either) I live in another area where they BUILT a bike trail along side, much better. The funny thing is people can PULL OVER to tend to a crying baby, but most in my life DO just drive faster. MY hubby included. OH and babies dying in the BACKS of vehicle (or in a vehicle period) was nearly UNHEARD OF until the “kids in the back” campaigns for safety kicked in. The idea of the comic is simplistic, If you don’t HAVE to, why DO you?

A previous poster mentioned buggies – we do have Amish people in our area who travel from their country homes to the small towns in buggies. They get to hold their babies on their laps! But they also must share the roads with speeding cars so I think they are taking a big risk. (They hire drivers to take them further, such as to Wal-Mart.)
Totally agree w/the comic’s point. I live out in the country which is great in many ways, but we have a 12 mile drive to town for groceries etc. and even further for the doctor and more shopping choices.
