not seeing formula adds yet..
I find it odd that they are making that big a deal about the sucrose, but pediatricians don't seem concerned about the corn syrup that's usually used.

I saw a little bit of irony in them trying to make it sweeter so it's like breastmilk and then worrying that the babies might prefer it over "other formulas and solid foods." Why don't we just use breastmilk- I'm pretty sure all babies prefer it, and more importantly, require it!

And I particularly like this line: "Doctors say that parents need not worry about the precise composition of formula, because the product over all has been proved safe and effective."
First- HAHAHAHAHA- add this to your Dr. Joke series
Second- which doctors? I love their meticulous referencing.

If people are so concerned that their children eat only "natural" foods, why not just feed them the most natural thing available- breastmilk?

We were sent home from the hospital with instructions to "fortify" my milk (which I was pumping for my preemie-baby) with formula to "support" her growth. After two weeks of dealing with the gassiness, fussiness, and overall miserable-ness that she was suffering through, it hit me that those problems only happened after she ate the "fortified" milk. When she took it straight from me, she was peaceful. We stopped fortifying, she started sleeping, and our whole world improved. And, big surprise, she's gaining weight at EXACTLY the same rate as before. (Probably because she's not throwing her food up as much!)

"Amy Chase started feeding Similac Organic infant formula to her second son, Amos, as soon as he was born in November 2006"

Two words. Poor Baby!

My daughter was born in Nov 2006 and is 'still' breastfed.

I agree with wiffersnapper.

A woman recently posted on a message board I visit, because she was 'worried' about her 19 month old who is now mostly eating processed foods and refusing home-made stuff (which apparently she was weaned on), yet the toddler was fed formula from birth.
Talk about crazy, the most over-processed, junk filled 'food' you can give and the baby had it from birth! Don't think I'd be worried about tins of beans and shop bought fish fingers at 19 months!

Oh it's maddening that so many (commenters) have posted the same uneducated tripe "not all mothers can breastfeed" "I didn't have enough milk" "the baby wouldn't latch on"...

Rubbish, lack of support or lack of commitment, dressed up.

How infuriating.

I just met a woman in the CVS who was having issues with latching on and I chatted with her in the store. I asked her if she went for help, support etc. She said yes. However her daughter's mouth wasn't able to open up enough. How can this be? nursing break......
is this likely?

Embrace- If my 3-lb daughter was able to open her mouth big enough to latch onto my grapefruit-sized boobie, then anyone can do it! When we started, my breasts were CONSIDERABLY bigger than her head! And, if nothing else, you can always pump milk until the baby gets the process figured out. At least that way they're still getting proper nutrition, and your supply doesn't dwindle.

Side note- A company called, "Yogi Tea" makes a nursing tea for supporting or increasing lactation, and WOW, it really works!

<i>The sweeter taste of Similac Organic was observed by a professional sensory-tasting panel, commissioned by The New York Times to do a blind tasting of eight nationally available formulas, soy and dairy, organic and not. Seven of the formulas were as sweet as unsweetened apple juice, said Gail Civille, the director of Sensory Spectrum, which performed the tests. Ms. Civille said Similac Organic was the sweetest, with “the sweetness of grape juice or Country Time lemonade."</i>

this sounds to me like adults actually tasted that crap. that makes me giggle.

The yoga mom bought the formula as soon as he was born? OKAY

It would be interesting for someone to study the relationship between antidepressants and diabetes in children as well. Antidepressants cause diabetes just not quite as quickly as Zyprexa. With all the moms taking them during pregnancy and all the kids being put on drugs (believe it or not, they have been actually giving babies these drugs) as well as all the moms being told to breastfeed on drugs it won't be long before we see similar rates of diabetes in breastfed and formula fed kids. (Did anyone read Growing up Bipolar in newsweek? They said that the boy showed signs of bipolar as a baby because he couldn't sleep and would bang his head against his crib. Then they put him on drugs by the time he was 2 and he has been on 38 different drugs now at the age of 10..)

I think there is more to the diabetes story than most people realize - it's constantly blamed on diet and formula yet it makes no sense - didn't we have more moms feeding their kids formula in the 50s than we do now? Back then it wasn't even a "good" recipe. Although I suppose kids played outside more and Monsanto hadn't sabotaged our food back then. Oh, and the food at school probably was better and they hadn't cut out PE yet.

Seems like with 1/5 of the nutrition in the average food compared to organic as well as toxic ingredients in our foods, people will instinctively eat more to try to get the nutrients they need.

amyphilo - i thought that was weird, too. re: "yoga mom"

also, the whole "organic formula" thing reminds me of a post on "stuff white people like" where "white people" would rather eat organic rat poison ("cause it's organic!!!!111!!) than a hungry man frozen dinner.

I don't get it.

"Amy" said sugar is a concern for them - she MIGHT re-consider her formula choice.

I don't get it.

How, how, how, can people have put so much thought into some things for baby but totally ignore, deny, look the other way about breastfeeding?

How, how, how, can WE help get breastfeeding back into mainstream American culture, to reach everyone? How can we get "Amy" to condsider breastfeeding her next baby instead?

I find it interesting (and false) that the article states there are "no known health risks" associated with the organic formula. Umm, hello, everyone knows there's risks with formula, and if they don't, they must've been living in a cave, in which case they're most likely breastfeeding! LOL.

Anyway, I've also heard that the "organic" formula isn't really organic at all! They by law HAVE to add chemicals (vitamins) that are made in a lab, and therefore are NOT organic!
