[...] Anti-Homebirth Press Release! February 11, 2008 at 8:35 am Filed under MUSINGS , bringing ‘em into the world , things to do , midwifery under attack! I love this article (thanks Jennifer ! and I hope you re enjoying Asheville! We miss you!) As homebirths become more popular, more and more celebrity mums… felt it was important to have some sort of relationship with the midwife.
re: "a mile away"

Another thing that's a mile away for many people is...the hospital! You know, in case you need it, in the unlikely event that your otherwise healthy pregnancy takes a bad turn at the very end. There it is, just a mile (or two) away.

ACOG's statement seems to assume that, in (the very unlikely) case something does go wrong, the mother is "stuck" at home, with no access to emergency care. That certainly is not the case for the majority of people in this country, who live in relatively densely populated areas.

There are two things here...
1) Of course ACOG is going to oppose homebirth- the more women give birth at home, the less money they make! So, of course, they're going to use every scare tactic they can think of to oppose it.

2) Also... how many labors/deliveries go bad because said, "professionals" help women to get pregnant whose bodies simply can't support a pregnancy? These women who use every medical technique to get themselves pregnant, despite the fact that their bodies are trying to tell them that it's not a good idea? (While how many children are in the foster system and need homes?) Then they give birth prematurely, and have all sorts of crazy complications, and the doctors act like that's "normal". I think they've forgotten what normal IS!

If they really want more women birthing in hospitals they should make them mother and baby friendly. Until that happens, they can shut the hell up.

I wish my husband wasn't so against a home birth :(... But we have a great midwife and a friendly birthing center so I am hoping for the best. Or I could just labor at home until it is "too late" :) Maybe I will be able to sway him in the next four months! :)

Another celebrity who endorses homebirth is Claudia Black (of Farscape and Stargate fame). I saw her speak at DragonCon (a Sci-Fi convention) last fall. She was pg and spent the first 5 minutes talking about how wonderful homebirth is (it's her second baby) and how media portrayals of birth scare people into medicalized birth. In the autograph line (I had to get her autograph after that speech!), I told her how happy I was that she talked about birthing and she said she wanted to talk about it more but was afraid she would lose all the men in the audience. There were probably 200-300 people at her talk.
