Thanks for quoting me Hathor! And using my screen name, since I'm actually pretty afraid of the judge myself still! But I did already email her about it, respectfully giving my opinion about her rulings (I've yet to hear back from her). I did use my real name, and I hope she doesn't come after me now! It's true what you say, with judges like this, how can any mother sleep? At least on here, I know I'm safe! :-)
I also emailed the senators with the form letter Mary Anaya provided, adding my comment, "I live in Omaha and I am appalled that something like this is giving our otherwise beautiful city and state a bad name nationwide." I've only heard back from one so far, Sen. Gwen Howard, saying:

"Thank you for your e-mail concerning infant health screenings.

As you may know, several bills have been introduced over the past years
to create an exemption in Nebraska. As a member of the Health and
Human Services Committee, I have opposed any exemption in the past and I
will continue to do so should the issue come up again before the
committee. I do not believe creating exemptions is good public health policy.

I appreciate your taking the time to write.

Sincerely,

Gwen Howard
State Senator"

So she is not going to try to change this law. I respect her decision, not because I am majoring in Social Work and planning on having a career similar to hers, and she is a mother too, but because I agree fundamentally that the law itself is not the major problem here.

The problem is Judge Crncovich's overly harsh enforcement of it. And really, keeping the baby in foster care while the test was processing and not allowing the baby to breastfeed much was not just excessive and unnecessary, but in my opinion, it was dictatorial and almost like, "You protest the law, I'm not only going to make you comply with it and pay for your transgression, but I'm going to make your children pay for it too. See how you like that! Mwha ha ha!" It's not like the mom beat her kids or did anything that even harmed anyone. Yet, all the time, I see cases where mothers are on drugs, beat their kid, or worse, and yet all they get is a warning and get their kids back within a few hours. And that's just in this city. It infuriates me. That's why I'm majoring in Social Work, probably also going to try to go into government as well. I want to change the system from the inside.

Sorry to rant about it, it's just a special subject to me. I'll probably write in my own blog about it if I have time. After all, I am a full-time college student and devoted mommy! You rock Hathor!
