Research on Allergy Study (cont.)
The ‘New Study’ posthas been revised to explain the differences between the people who did the study and the people who paid for the study and the governmental organization that called for studies…so if you’re following the story, please revise your brain as well ;o)
this from a mama reader of thecowgoddess.com:
Hi Hathor,
I’m a long time reader of your comics as well as a long time breastfeeder, the comics always put a smile on my face and make a point too, they’re great.I just wanted to clarify about the research info you posted. The European Union 6th framework thingy is actually this: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/faq_en.html (well this is framework 7, framework 6 has finished). Its not actually specifically about infant nutrition.
Basically within a framework (each one lasts for a few years) there are many calls for proposals on different topics, so I guess there was one on infant nutrition. For each call, a number of consortiums consisting of universities and companies from all over Europe will put in research proposals under the topic for which submissions were invited. They are scored and the highest score gets funding. They fund a lot of good stuff too, like this project on breast cancer: http://www.metabre.org . I am assuming probit and earnest are 2 projects that got through and were funded by the program.
It’s the EARNEST (go ahead scroll on down their consortium for a real thrill! and check out their description “Other aspects of the project include studies to investigate consumer attitudes to early nutrition programming and the economic importance of early nutrition programming.” spine tingling, huh? ) and the PROBIT study pdf that have some tricky ties to the formula industry…
Love,
Heather

From the ERNEST website:
” * Does maternal diet have beneficial long term effects on visual, motor and cognitive development, and cardiovascular risk factors, including obesity propensity and type II diabetes for the child?
* Is prenatal docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supply safe with regard to growth, infection rates, and occurrence of other potential adverse effects?
* Does infant feeding effect long-term adult health outcomes (atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, obesity, development of allergies, development of food preferences, and bone health)?
* Do neonatal fatty acid status and supplementation of formula feeds with long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) affects specific measures of neurodevelopmental outcome at the age of 8-12 years in term and preterm infants?
* Are gut bacteria different between children developing and not developing allergic disease?
* Are pre- and probiotic interventions during the neonatal period efficient and safe in the long-term?”
How about we toss out all the above questions and replace it with these ones from my little mother mind:
*Would our children be healthier if we just took out the science and the lab made ingredients and offered them only REAL food from birth on?
*And if, while we were pregnant, we ate REAL fish and REAL fruits and veges so that we didn’t have to take the gigantic pills with “prenatal docosahexaenoic acid”?
But I guess that is just thinking too deep. We are talking about scientists in the food industry, after all. Bring on the research into the ways man-made chemicals can improve those unreliable mechanisms called pregnancy and child nutrition!

LOVE the cartoon!!! Right on, as usual. You definitely are a Goddess. But if I had to name you, the name would probably be The Goddess of Breastfeeding Promotion Who Doesn’t Fall for the Formula Machine’s Window Dressing. And that’s a bit long. CowGODDESS it is, then.

okay, if we’re talking allergies, we need to forget breastmilk vs. formula and look at vaxed vs. non-vaxed. then, go a step further and look at breastfed/non-vaxed vs. breastfed/vaxed vs. formula-fed/vaxed.
i do think it’s absolute crap that the formula companies could actually be so underhanded as to fund and publish such a ludicrous study. but we’ve always known they’re evil, so unfortunately, it didn’t surprise me….
and yes, the comic was right on.
